It covers your entire
body and has a surface area of around 2 square metres. Its thickness varies
from 0.5 mm on your eyelids to 4 mm or more on the palms of your hands and the
soles of your feet. In total, it accounts for around 16 percent of your body
weight.
2) Your skin consists of two main
layers:
The outer epidermis and the inner dermis. Cells in the deepest layer of
your epidermis divide constantly to make new cells. Cells on the surface of
your skin rub and flake off steadily and are continuously replaced with new
ones. About every 30 days, your body produces a totally new epidermis. Your
skin renews the top layer of cells every 24 hours.
3) Your inner dermis consists of :
Strong
collagen and elastic fibres pierced by blood vessels. It also contains touch,
pressure and pain sensors and is packed with hair follicles, sweat and oil
glands. The oil glands produce a lubricant that keeps your skin soft and
prevents your hair from becoming brittle.
4) The skin is the largest elimination organ:
It
is known to be responsible for 10 to 15% of total body elimination, and is
sometimes referred to as the third kidney. Your skin works in conjunction with
other organs of elimination such as the colon, kidneys, and lungs. If one of
these organs is stressed and not eliminating waste products efficiently, then
the remaining organs will have to bear a greater burden.
5) The skin eliminates:
About 2 pounds of waste
acids each day in the average adult, most of it through the sweat glands. The
waste is mostly crystals of uric acid and other dried waste products.
6) The skin receives:
One third of all the blood
circulated in the body. The skin is the last to receive nutrients in
the body, yet the first to show signs of imbalance or deficiency such as
dryness, redness, itchy, peeling or discoloration.
A thorough skin care routine is vitally
important to keeping skin healthy and performing its best. Cleanse the skin
twice per day, drink plenty of water, and eat a balanced diet to maintain the
health of this important organ.
Dry skin brushing is a swift and powerful way
to enhance the detoxification process and yield tremendous benefits.
